Submitted to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The ABS is completing a refresh of the principles used for assigning the 'discretionary food' flag to individual food codes.

The refreshed principles will be used in the analysis of the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) data.

We have submitted our feedback supporting the direction of the revised principles and note the importance of further review upon publication of the new edition of the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
