Submitted to Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

Dietitians Australia responded to the review of the FSANZ Act, highlighting the following issues:

Our primary concerns with the current system and the Act are:

  • The current FSANZ Act does not adequately protect against long-term health outcomes and diet-related diseases
  • The methodology used in the Impact Analysis fails to address how FSANZ will tackle long-term health issues
  • Public health needs much greater consideration throughout the entirety of the Act.

We recommended that the Act be amended to include a set of considerations that FSANZ must take into account when setting priorities and when making decisions on proposals, applications, or standard reviews. The purpose of these considerations is to set clear and consistent expectations around how public health benefits and risks should be assessed in developing, reviewing, updating and adopting food standards.
