Our aged care advocacy work since 2019

  • Launched the Menu & Mealtime Quality Assessment for Residential Aged Care (members only resource), April 2021
  • Hosted 3 complimentary aged care webinars: (1) Aged Care Quality Standards Toolkit for APDs; (2) malnutrition screening using a food first approach; (3) Aged Care Royal Commission final report and implications for APDs
  • Dietitians Australia was represented on an expert panel discussion at the National Congress on Food, Nutrition and the Dining Experience, February 2021
  • Met with Senator Colbeck, Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, December 2020. Progressed to a bi-monthly standing meeting with our CEO in 2021
  • Collaborated with our Aged Care Subject Matter Leads to develop 8 Aged Care Position Statements, December 2020
  • Responded to recommendations from Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, November 2020
  • Launched the Aged Care Quality Standards Toolkit (members only resource), December 2020
  • Devised an ‘Aged Care Advocacy Plan’ for Dietitians Australia drawing on feedback from ‘Think Tank’ discussions and the previous Aged Care Working Party, October 2020
  • Appointed two Aged Care Subject Matter Leads (September 2020) to assist with advocacy work
  • Coordinated an aged care ‘Think Tank’ for members, July 2020
  • Dietitians Australia (attended by CEO Robert Hunt and APD Sharon Lawrence) appeared before the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, July 2020
  • Lodged 1 main submission and 3 subsequent submissions to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (March 2019 – June 2020)
  • Represented on the Clinical Expert Group for the Development of Residential Aged Care Quality Indicators project
  • Wrote to all residential aged care homes in Australia about malnutrition risk during COVID -19, May 2020
  • Wrote to Senator Colbeck about accelerated rates of unintentional weight loss in residential aged care, April 2020
  • Formed a time limited ‘Aged Care Working Party’ (January 2019) to develop a response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and provide advice on CPD to support excellence of practice for APDs working in aged care
  • Lodged 16 submissions relevant to aged care (March 2019 – April 2021)
