If you apply for a Dietetic Skills Recognition (DSR) assessment or a skills migration assessment, you must prove your English language skills.
To do this, you must pass an approved English language test. Or have an approved qualification from one of our specified countries.
English language skills
To practise dietetics in Australia, you need to be able to speak and write in English.
You must prove your English language skills if you apply for a DSR assessment or a skills migration assessment.
Before you apply for your assessment, you need to pass an English language proficiency test.
All costs related to an English language proficiency tests are to be covered by the applicant.
Exemptions from the English language test
There are 2 exemptions to the English language test requirement.
A dietetics qualification from a specified country
You don't need to take an English language test if you've finished a tertiary dietetics degree or post-graduate diploma (of at least 2 years) in one of these countries:
- Canada (except Quebec)
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- United States of America
A recent accredited Australian degree
You don't need to take an English language test if you finished an accredited dietetics degree in Australia. You must have completed your degree no more than 2 years before applying for your skills migration assessment.
Approved English language proficiency tests
If you don't meet either of the exemptions above, you must pass one of our 3 approved English language proficiency tests.
You should take your English language test before you apply for your DSR assessment or skills migration assessment.
If you're sitting for an IELTS exam, you must take the IELTS Academic version of their test.
IELTS score requirements
You must achieve a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components:
- listening
- reading
- writing
- speaking
You must get an overall band score of 7 or more.
We do accept One Skill Retake results.

The OET is a test developed for healthcare professions, including dietetics.
We accept either the OET on Paper or the OET on Computer version of their test.

You must achieve a minimum of 350 (B) in each of the 4 components:
- listening
- reading
- writing
- speaking

The Pearson PTE Academic English language test is computer-based.
If you're sitting for a PTE English exam, you must take the PTE Academic version.
PTE score requirements
You must achieve a minimum of 65 across all components of the test.

Your English language test results are valid for 2 years.
Your test results must be current when you apply for your DSR assessment. And when you sit both your MCQ and oral dietetic exams.
