Can food additives affect my child’s behaviour?
For most people, foods with additives are perfectly safe and there is no need to worry about eating them as part of a healthy, varied diet.
However, some people may be intolerant or allergic to certain food additives or ingredients and need to be careful about eating these.
There are many factors associated with hyperactive behaviour in children. Some studies have shown a link between behaviour and foods and drinks made with certain artificial food colours and preservatives.
This research suggests certain additives and preservatives may influence a child’s behaviour, but further research is needed as other studies provide conflicting results.
Not all children respond equally to food additives and preservatives so avoiding these chemicals may not help all children.
If you suspect that your child may be reacting to food additives and preservatives, seek the professional advice of an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD).
