Is there a special diet I should follow while trying to get pregnant?
Following a healthy eating plan before pregnancy is a positive step towards a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
If you are overweight, reducing your weight by even a modest amount (5-7%) can help you to conceive, especially if you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
It is recommended that you:
- Get enough folate, iron and calcium and
- Avoid alcohol and high doses of caffeine.
Physical activity is also important before and during pregnancy.
Ask your GP or Obstetrician for a referral to an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and a health care professional for advice on an appropriate physical activity program.
An APD can help you to plan and implement a healthy pregnancy eating plan.
