What extra nutrients do I need in pregnancy?
Good nutrition in pregnancy is essential.
During pregnancy the food a mother consumes provides fuel for the baby’s growth and development – on top of keeping mum healthy!
This is a really important time to eat nutrient-dense foods as nutrient requirements increase. Try and eat regular meals and snacks based around whole foods – fruit and vegetables, whole grain foods, dairy foods, meat, fish, nuts and seeds.
Important nutrients include protein, iron, iodine, calcium and folate.
A folate supplement before conception and for the first three months of pregnancy is also recommended.
An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) can help you to plan and implement a healthy pregnancy eating plan.
